SMR Grid Integration

Power-system engineering for nuclear-integrated grids.

We model how Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) can be integrated into national and regional electricity systems, studying grid stability, dispatch, renewable integration, transmission requirements and long-term energy-system resilience.

About This Research Area

Engineering & Simulation of SMR-Integrated Power Systems

Engineering and simulation of power systems integrating SMRs with conventional generation, renewable energy, storage and transmission networks. This work sits at the core of ZapTek's Nuclear Energy & Power Systems division, combining power-system modelling, grid simulation, and data-driven analysis to study how nuclear generation can work alongside renewable energy and other power-generation technologies to deliver reliable, resilient and sustainable electricity systems.

What We Study

Focus Areas

Power Flow Modeling

Simulating how power generated by SMRs flows through transmission and distribution networks alongside conventional generation.

Grid Stability & Dispatch

Studying frequency regulation, dispatch scheduling, and stability margins when nuclear generation is added to a grid mix.

Renewable Energy Integration

Modeling how SMRs complement solar, wind, and hydro generation to balance intermittency and maintain reliable supply.

Transmission Requirements

Assessing transmission network capacity, siting, and upgrade requirements for connecting new nuclear generation.

Storage & Distributed Resources

Evaluating the role of storage and distributed energy resources in smoothing power flow around SMR deployment.

Long-Term Energy-System Resilience

Researching how nuclear-integrated grids withstand demand growth, faults, and evolving generation mixes over decades.

Methodology

Our Research Approach

Step 01

Model & Simulate

We build power-system models of national and regional grids, then simulate SMR interconnection scenarios under varying load and generation conditions.

Step 02

Analyze Grid Stability

We study frequency response, power flow, and fault behavior to understand how nuclear generation affects grid stability and dispatch.

Step 03

Co-Optimize With Renewables

We evaluate how SMRs and renewable generation can be scheduled together to maximize reliability while minimizing curtailment.

Step 04

Plan for Resilience

We translate findings into transmission and resilience recommendations for long-term, sustainable grid operation.
